Carrot Seeds - Danvers 126
Open Pollinated
Days to Maturity: 75 days
A carrot you can count on! Danvers 126 is a stocky variety with broad shoulders up to 2 inches wide and a tapered V-shaped root averaging 7 to 8 inches long. Danvers 126 Carrots are a bright, deep-orange color. Strong tops make it easy to pull this carrot from the garden. Danvers 126 resist cracking and splitting and show superior disease resistance. This is a great variety for canning, freezing, storing and makes a superb glass of carrot juice for a home-grown daily dose of beta carotene. A practical, all-around variety which thrives even in a wide range of soils and has a high tolerance for hot conditions. Danvers 126 was created for better yields, smoother skin and uniformity. This is a premier storage carrot.
GENERAL GROWING INFORMATION
Sowing: Direct Sow. Germination temperature: 50 to 85 F. Will germinate at temperatures as low as 40 F. Will germinate in 7-21 days with adequate moisture.
Sowing Depth: 1/4 inch
Germination: 7-21 days
Sun: Full Sun
Botanical Name: Daucus carota
When To Plant
Plant in spring, 2 to 5 weeks before last frost, 1/4 inch deep. Deeply worked soil with fine, weed-free seedbed will greatly improve chances of successful crop. Make sure your soil is free of stones. Carrots need deeply tilled soil that they can push through.
Carrots are slow to germinate (1 to 3 weeks), and often germinate unevenly over a period of several weeks. To speed germination, water lightly daily if soil is dry.
Make additional plantings every three weeks through midsummer for continuous supply and fall harvest.
Spacing & Depth
1-3 inches apart, in rows 12 to 24 inches apart.
For more even spacing and less thinning mix seed in roughly equal proportions with sand, fine vermiculite, or dried coffee grounds.
Care
Thinning is critical to reduce competition from neighboring plants. Thin to 1 to 4-inch spacing (depending on size of root desired) before plants are 2 inches tall.
Mulch to speed germination, keep soil cool, conserve moisture and to keep exposed "shoulders" from turning green and bitter.
Water at least one inch per week.
Weed diligently.
Fertilize 5-6 weeks after sowing.
Root quality is best when soil temperatures are 60 F to 70 F. The shape of the root is determined within the first few weeks after germination when the new plant extends its taproot deep into the soil. If it encounters obstacles (such as rocks or high water table) or is damaged, shape and quality of the root will suffer.
To prevent diseases, don’t plant carrots in the same spot more than once every 3 years.
Harvesting Carrots: Test that the tops of your carrot plants have filled out to the expected diameter by feeling just below the soil line. The only true test is to lift one and taste.
Harvest by twisting and pulling or digging. Remove the leaves, once harvested. The leaves will continue to take energy and moisture from the roots, leaving them limp and lessening the sweetness of your carrots.
Germination:
1. Seeds Packets are labeled with seed name and sowing details.
2. Seeds have not been pretreated unless specified in the listing.
3. Seed is not a specific Cultivar (Variety) unless specified in the listing.
4. Due to the many factors involved in successful germination, Seller cannot be responsible for buyers growing methods or mistakes.
5. I have provided what I believe to be a good overview on this page (which you are free to print for further reference), however, it is still recommended to check specialist literature for more details and practices specific to your climate and soil conditions to avoid mistakes in the germination and growing process.
