Japanese White Pine creates a striking landscape element wherever it is used. Trees have a dense pyramidal habit when young, but with age develop more spreading branching and a flatter top. Often-twisted, green needles (each to 3” long) in bundles of five appear in dense tufts primarily at the branch ends. Needles are white on the interior surfaces. Oval reddish-brown cones 2 to 3 inches long appear solitary or in small clusters, remaining on the tree for up to seven years. Grayish black bark is smooth on young trees but fissures and develops small scales as the tree matures. This lovely tree has an outstanding irregular silhouette, making it a great specimen for nearly any landscape. It is also a popular subject for bonsai. Leaf: Evergreen needles in fascicles of 5, 2 to 2 1/2 inches long, often curved or arching, blue-green to green. Flower: Monoecious; males cylindrical, purple ripening to yellow, near branch tip; females yellow to purple, appearing in late spring. Fruit: A small (2 to 3 inches long), egg-shaped cone with leathery scales, large seeds, ripening in early fall to a reddish brown, remain on the tree for several years. Twig: Moderate, gray-brown, foliage may appear tufted near ends. Bark: Gray, shallowly fissured with scaly ridge tops. Form: A small graceful looking tree that develops a flat topped spreading crown, reaches heights of 40 to 50 feet in the landscape. Other Names: Five-needle Pine, Five Needle Pine Zone: 5 to 7 (Possibly 4) Growth Rate: Slow Plant Type: Needled Evergreen, Conifer Family: Pinaceae Native Range: Southern and central Japan, China Height: 30 to 50 feet Spread: 30 to 50 feet Shape: Young trees dense and conical, older trees develop picturesque form. Sun: Full Sun Fall Color: Evergreen Drought Tolerance: Moderate Water: Medium Maintenance: Medium Site Requirements /Soil Tolerances: Grow in medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun. Tolerant of a variety of soil types, including poor soils, as long as the drainage is good. Plants prefer cool summer climates and dislike the heat and humidity of the deep South. Plants are generally tolerant of urban conditions and salt. Culture: Bark is thin and easily damaged from mechanical impact; droop as the tree grows, and will require pruning for vehicular or pedestrian clearance beneath the canopy. Uses: Popular Bonsai.
